How To Do a Dutch Braid: Hair Tutorial for Beginners

If you’re anything like us (constantly scrolling through Instagram or Pinterest), you’ve probably noticed how Dutch braids are everywhere!

Today, we’re going back to basics with a step-by-step guide on how to master the Dutch braid. It’s the perfect way to level up your braiding skills and turn those hair-inspo photos into reality.

By the way, if you feel like your braids aren’t as long or thick as you’d like, clip-in hair extensions are the quickest, easiest, and safest way to add length and volume. In this tutorial, Karin is wearing the 220g Clip-in Hair Extension Blonde HazuHair set to give her braids extra highlights and fullness.

How to Dutch Braid: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1:

Start by taking a section of hair from the top of your head and dividing it into 3 equal parts: left, middle, and right.

Take some hair at the top and separate it into 3 equal sections left middle and right

Step 2:

Take the left section and cross it under the middle section.

Step 3:

Now take the right section and cross it under the middle.

Step 4:

Here’s where we start adding more hair. Take a small piece of hair from the left side (from the loose hair), and combine it with the left section you’re already holding.

Step 5:

Cross that combined section under the middle section.

Step 6:

Do the same on the right side: grab a section of loose hair, add it to the right section, and cross it under the middle.

Step 7:

That’s the basic technique! Continue alternating sides – adding hair from the left, crossing under the middle, then adding hair from the right, and crossing under the middle. Once you get the hang of it, the Dutch braid will come naturally!

Step 8:

Keep braiding downwards until you reach the nape of your neck. Continue adding hair from both sides as you braid—left under the middle, right under the middle—until all your hair is incorporated.

Step 9:

Once you reach the nape of your neck, check in the mirror to ensure the braid looks neat. Then, pull all the remaining hair to one side and finish with a simple three-strand braid.
