How to Dye a Wig Without Staining The Lace

Dyeing a wig is a popular way to enhance your hairstyle. However, the process can quickly go wrong, and one of the most common issues people face is stained lace. This can ruin the overall look of your wig and leave it with an unnatural appearance.

If you’re wondering how to dye a wig without staining the lace, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about dyeing a wig and how to avoid staining the lace.

What You Should Know

Before you dive into coloring your wig, it’s important to understand that dyeing your wig can cause irreversible damage. At XRS Beauty, we don’t recommend performing any at-home chemical treatments on your wig (like dyeing, bleaching, perming, or relaxing). Instead, we suggest choosing a pre-dyed wig or consulting a professional wig colorist for the best results.

However, if you’re determined to dye your wig at home, it’s possible to do so. Just make sure to read this article thoroughly to minimize the chances of a wig disaster.

Which Human Hair Wigs Are Best for Dyeing?

Before dyeing your wig, ensure it’s suitable for the dyeing process. Dyeing the wrong type of wig can lead to costly mistakes. Here are some tips to help you pick the right human hair wig for dyeing:

  • Choose Virgin Human Hair Wigs in a Natural Color: Virgin wigs are unprocessed and can absorb dye more easily. Avoid dyeing jet-black wigs, as it’s challenging to achieve noticeable color results.
  • Opt for 613 Blonde Hair: 613 blonde wigs can be dyed virtually any color because they’re the lightest and most versatile wig option. You won’t need to pre-lighten the hair for your chosen color to take.

Dyeing Tips to Keep in Mind

Once you’ve confirmed that your wig is suitable for dyeing, you’re ready to begin. Here are some important tips to help avoid damaging your wig:

  • Don’t bleach your wig before dyeing: Bleach is much harsher than dye and can easily damage your wig. Most wigs have already gone through some processing, which means the hair may already be compromised.
  • Follow the dye instructions: The manufacturer’s instructions are crucial for achieving the best results. If you don’t use the dye as directed, you may end up with disappointing results.
  • Use the lowest developer possible: If you’re dyeing dark hair with permanent dye, avoid using high-volume developers (like 40 or 50). These strong developers can severely damage the wig hair.

How to Choose a Dye Color

Choosing the right dye color can be challenging, but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.

  • Avoid extreme color changes: If your wig is black, it’s not advisable to aim for pastel pink without pre-lightening the hair first, as this could increase the risk of damage. Gradual color changes are safer and yield better results.
  • Consider your skin tone: Matching the dye color to your skin complexion is important for achieving a harmonious look. Here are some tips:
    • Warm undertones: If your skin has warm yellow or gold undertones, shades like platinum blonde, honey blonde, and chocolate brown complement your complexion well.
    • Cool undertones: For those with cool bluish or pinkish undertones, golden brown, amber, and brown-black shades are flattering.
    • Neutral undertones: If your skin tone is neutral, you can experiment with reds, blue-black, or dark brown.

Ultimately, the choice is yours. Experimenting with bold, unexpected colors can be fun, so don’t hesitate to try something outside the box – you might just love the outcome!

Tools and Products

Once you’ve chosen your hair dye, it’s time to gather the tools and products you’ll need for the dyeing process. Make sure to pick up the following items from your local beauty supply store or online:

  • Hair Color: Decide between semi-permanent or permanent dye based on your desired outcome. For a short-term change, opt for semi-permanent dye, which will gradually fade with each wash. If you’re seeking a long-lasting transformation, go for permanent dye. Remember, the longer and thicker your wig, the more dye you’ll need.
  • Developer (for permanent hair dye only): Do not use a developer with semi-permanent dye. To lift your wig by 1 to 2 levels, choose a 20-volume developer. For 2 to 3 levels, a 30-volume developer is ideal. We recommend avoiding developers stronger than 30 volume, as 40 and 50 volume developers are harsh and can damage your wig.
  • Additional Supplies:
    • Tinting Brush
    • Long spoon (for the watercolor method)
    • Old towel
    • Comb
    • Gloves
    • Wig mannequin head
    • T-Pins
    • Vaseline (optional: to protect lace)
    • Gel and Got2b Glued Spray (optional: to protect lace)
    • Plastic bag (optional)
    • Plastic tub (for the watercolor method)
    • Toothbrush (optional)
    • Newspaper (optional)
    • Microfiber towel

Prepare Your Wig for Dyeing

Prepping your wig is a three-step process: washing, drying, and detangling. Here’s how to do it:

  • Wash: Clean your wig as you normally would, but skip the conditioner. Conditioning can create a barrier between the hair and the dye, affecting the dye’s absorption.
  • Dry: Thoroughly dry your wig. Air drying is the gentlest method, but if you’re in a hurry, you can use a blow dryer on the “cool” setting.
  • Detangle: Brush your wig from the ends to the roots to remove any tangles. Hold the roots with one hand to avoid pulling while brushing the mid-lengths and ends with the other. Once detangled, your wig is ready for the next step.

Dyeing Your Wig Step by Step

There are various techniques to dye a wig, each offering unique advantages. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you achieve beautiful results without damaging your wig or staining the lace.

Note on Bleach: If you’re attempting to lighten your wig from very dark to a lighter shade, which we don’t recommend, bleaching may be necessary. In this case, we suggest consulting a professional colorist for assistance.

Step 1: Protect the Lace

Preventing lace stains is crucial, and you have two effective methods to choose from depending on the dyeing technique you’re using:

Option 1: Vaseline Method (Ideal for Watercolor Dyeing)

  1. Cover your mannequin head with a plastic bag to protect it from the Vaseline.
  2. Turn your wig inside out and place it securely on the mannequin head using T-Pins.
  3. Apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the lace, being careful to avoid the fabric portions of the wig.
  4. Proceed with your chosen dyeing process.

Option 2: Got2b Spray and Gel Method (Best for Brush Dye Applications)

  1. Turn your wig inside out and secure it on the mannequin head.
  2. Apply a gel to cover the entire lace area.
  3. Let the lace dry completely, either naturally or using a blow dryer.
  4. Spray Got2b Glued Spray over the lace and allow it to dry.
  5. Proceed with the dyeing steps.

Tip: While these methods significantly reduce the chances of staining, minor stains may still occur but will be less noticeable.

Step 2: Mix the Dye

The process for mixing dye depends on whether you’re using semi-permanent or permanent dye:

  • Semi-permanent dye: No mixing is required.
  • Permanent dye: Mix 1 part dye with 1 part developer (10, 20, or 30 volume) as per the dye’s instructions. Stir the mixture with a tinting brush until smooth. Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and wear gloves for protection.

Mix Up the Dye

For watercolor dyeing:

  1. Fill a plastic tub with piping hot water.
  2. Add drops or globs of semi-permanent dye based on your desired color intensity.
  3. Stir with a long spoon until the dye is fully dissolved in the water.

Step 3: Apply the Dye

Depending on the method you choose, you’ll apply the dye in different ways:

For Semi-permanent and Permanent Dye:

  1. Place the wig on a mannequin head (not inside out) and secure it with T-Pins.
  2. Detangle the wig if necessary.
  3. Apply the dye in sections, starting with 4 to 6 equal parts of the wig.
  4. Use a tinting brush or your gloved hands to apply the dye to the strands, taking care not to get too close to the lace.
  5. If the wig lies flat during dyeing, lay it on a covered surface and carefully apply dye to every strand, using a toothbrush near the lace for precision.

Apply the Dye

For Watercolor Dyeing:

  1. Submerge the wig fully into the tub of dyed water.
  2. Leave the wig in for a few minutes and swirl it around to ensure even color distribution.

Step 4: Process and Rinse

  • For Semi-permanent and Permanent Dyes: Allow the color to process for 25 to 45 minutes (check the dye’s instructions for exact timing). Rinse the wig thoroughly once the time is up and follow up with a conditioning treatment, either included with the dye or your usual wig conditioner.
  • For Watercolor Dyeing: Periodically lift the wig from the water to check the color. Once you’re happy with the results, remove the wig from the tub.

Step 5: Dry the Wig

After rinsing, towel-dry your wig with a microfiber towel. For best results, air-dry it on a mannequin head or in an open space. If you need to speed up the process, use a blow dryer on the “Cool” setting. Your wig is now ready for further styling!

Dyeing a wig can feel overwhelming with so many potential challenges, but with this guide, you’ll be able to confidently transform your wig with a fresh new color right at home!
