How to Make Your Hair Extensions Last

We all know that high-quality human hair weave can be quite an investment, so it’s important to care for it properly to get the most out of it.

Personally, I love a fabulous weave, especially one that’s 18 inches long with a perfect middle part.

But the secret to keeping your hair extensions looking flawless and lasting longer lies in how you care for them. Proper maintenance is key to ensuring your extensions stay in top condition and continue to enhance your look.

How to Make Your Hair Extensions Last

1. Before Installation

I can’t emphasise enough how important it is to wash your natural hair before installing extensions.

At HazuHair, we offer raw human hair bundles, which we co-wash to ensure they’re ready for installation. However, you’re welcome to wash them yourself if you prefer.

Trust me, I learned this lesson the hard way – after installing my extensions without washing my hair first, I couldn’t stop itching due to a dry scalp.

For the best results, I recommend using Organix Moroccan Argan Oil shampoo and conditioner for both your natural hair and your extensions. You can find it at most drugstores, and it often goes on sale at CVS.

If you’re on a budget, no worries! Garnier Fructis offers a range of affordable, quality hair products that work well too.

2. How to Co-Wash Your Hair

Co-washing your hair is simple. Start by wetting the hair with water.

Next, apply a moisturizing, oil-free conditioner from the weft to the tips. Be generous with the amount to ensure the hair is well-moisturised.

After applying the conditioner, use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle the hair, ensuring even distribution of the product. Allow the conditioner to sit for about 15-20 minutes to deeply hydrate the hair.

Once the hair has rehydrated, rinse out all the conditioner thoroughly.

Finally, gently pat your extensions with a towel to remove excess water, then let them air dry.

Avoid rubbing the hair together as this can cause frizz and tangles that are difficult to manage.

3. Installing Hair Extensions

Before installation, it’s always a good idea to consult with your hairstylist for their suggestions. Don’t hesitate to ask any questions or share your concerns—after all, it’s your hair and your money.

When properly cared for, hair extensions can last up to a year or even longer.

Personally, when I have my weave sewn in, I always request that my stylist does not cut the bundles during installation. Cutting them can make it more complicated to reinstall later. It’s better to install the entire weft to preserve the integrity of the hair.

Be sure to mention the folding weft method to your stylist. This technique involves sewing the extensions from right to left, and when you reach the end, simply fold the weft over in the opposite direction. To avoid lumps or excess bulk, press the folded edge down securely and sew it in place.

No matter your desired style, it’s always a good idea to keep the length in mind when installing your hair. For example, if you want a curly look, starting with longer hair will give you more flexibility.

Additionally, if you care for your extensions properly, you can reuse them for different styles in the future. Get the most out of your investment and enjoy the longevity of your bundles!

4. Post Install Hair Care

It’s been about a month since your hair was installed, and while your weave is still looking fabulous, you know it’s time for a touch-up. Depending on your hairstyle, here’s how you can keep your hair in great condition:

“Traditional Sew-Ins”

With a traditional sew-in, part of your natural hair is left out, which means it will need extra care.

When you wash your bundles, be sure to also wash your natural hair. After shampooing, deep condition your leave-out to lock in moisture and keep it healthy.

Remember to detangle your weave while the conditioner is still in your hair. This reduces the strain on your extensions and helps avoid damage.

Once you’ve combed through your hair, rinse the conditioner out.

For drying, don’t blow-dry your bundles. Allow them to air dry to restore their natural texture. If your extensions are curly or wavy, you can braid them close to the scalp or individually. Once you take them out, you’ll have beautiful waves. For straight hair, simply leave it to air dry or tie it into a loose ponytail until dry.

Once your hair is dry, you can style it as desired. Just be mindful of the products you use. You shouldn’t need too many, and it’s important to choose products that are gentle on both your natural hair and extensions.

For moisture and shine, try Organix Anti-Breakage Keratin Argan Oil. It’s a lightweight oil that works well for both your natural hair and weave, adding hydration and a healthy shine without weighing the hair down. You can find this oil at most drugstores.

5. How to Wrap Your Hair

The way you wrap your hair is crucial to ensuring it stays protected and maintains its health. Here’s how to do it:

One method is to cover your head with the scarf starting at your forehead, then bring it underneath your hair at the nape of your neck. Tie the ends of the scarf securely. When using this technique, be cautious not to catch your hair in the knot, which can be tricky since you won’t be able to see the back of your head.

My preferred method is to gather my hair into the scarf at the nape of my neck, then tie the ends at the top of my head. This way, I can easily see my hair and avoid tying it too tightly or into a knot.

Remember, treat your extensions with the same care as your natural hair to ensure they last longer. Proper maintenance before, during, and after installation offers numerous benefits, including the ability to reuse your extensions. So, be sure to save those bundles!

What to Wrap Your Hair With?

  • While silk bonnets and scarves may feel a bit uncomfortable at first, they are essential for keeping your hair protected and in place overnight.
  • Never sleep directly on your extensions, as this can cause tangling, frizziness, and static.
  • When choosing a scarf for bedtime, opt for silk or satin materials. These fabrics protect your hair by maintaining moisture and preventing friction. Their smooth texture allows your hair to glide over them without getting caught, keeping your extensions intact and looking their best.

Quick Tips to Make Your Hair Weave Last Longer

Best Practices for Installing Hair Extensions

To extend the lifespan of your hair extensions, proper installation is essential. Here are some tips, especially for black women:

  1. Gentle Handling: Be gentle when installing extensions to avoid unnecessary stress or damage. Avoid pulling or tugging on the hair, as this can cause strain.
  2. Secure Installation: Whether you’re using sew-ins, clip-ins, glue, or a wig, ensure the extensions are securely installed but not too tight. Over-tightening can create tension on your scalp, potentially damaging both your natural hair and extensions.
  3. Leave Out a Small Portion of Natural Hair: For sew-ins or human hair wigs, consider leaving out a small section of your natural hair to cover the tracks. This not only helps the extensions blend seamlessly but also reduces strain on your natural hair.
  4. Scalp Care: Keep your scalp healthy by cleansing and moisturizing it regularly, even when wearing extensions. This will promote healthy natural hair growth and extend the life of your weave.
  5. Silk Press: For a sleek, straightened look, consider a silk press. This technique involves blow-drying and flat-ironing your hair, giving a smooth finish that can last up to two weeks.

Nighttime Care Tips to Preserve Your Extensions

Taking care of your extensions overnight is vital for making them last longer. Here are some tips:

  1. Silk or Satin Scarves: Wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf before bed, or use a silk/satin pillowcase. These fabrics reduce friction, helping prevent tangling and matting.
  2. Loose Braids or Ponytails: To avoid tangling, gently braid your hair or tie it in a loose ponytail. This is particularly important for curly or wavy hair extensions.
  3. Moisturize and Protect: Lightly apply a leave-in conditioner or natural oil to keep your extensions moisturized. Be mindful not to use too much product to avoid build-up, which can weigh down the extensions.

Routine Maintenance for Hair Extensions: Essential Tips for Black Women

Maintaining your hair extensions is key to ensuring their longevity and keeping them looking flawless. Here are some essential maintenance tips:

  1. Regular Washing: Clean your extensions regularly with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to prevent product build-up and the accumulation of natural oils. This helps keep the extensions lightweight and ensures they don’t lose their shine or become weighed down.
  2. Deep Conditioning: Every 2-4 weeks, apply a deep conditioner or hair mask to keep your extensions moisturized and vibrant. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid product build-up.
  3. Detangling: Always detangle your extensions gently, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots. Use a wide-tooth comb or soft bristle brush to prevent knots and matting. Detangling both before and after washing is key to keeping your extensions smooth.
  4. Heat Styling with Care: If you style your extensions with heat tools, always use a heat protectant spray. Minimize the use of hot tools, as excessive heat can damage both your natural hair and extensions over time.
  5. Professional Check-Ups: For long-lasting extensions, consider visiting a professional stylist who specializes in extensions for regular check-ups. They can identify and address issues such as loose tracks or tangling before they become bigger problems.
