Are you looking to enhance your hairstyle with sew-in hair extensions but unsure about the best installation method? You’re not alone!
It’s not just the traditional glue and sew-in methods that dominate the scene; there are numerous techniques to choose from. Some are so straightforward that you can even do them yourself with the right human hair bundles.
With each passing year, new sew-in installation methods for extensions emerge, and I’m excited to explore them all!
Options abound! Below, I’ll share six different methods for putting weave in your hair.
What Is a Weave?
A weave installation is a hairstyling technique where hair extensions are attached to natural hair to add length, volume, or color without changing the natural hair’s structure.
The hair weaving process typically involves braiding the natural hair into cornrows, onto which the extensions are sewn, glued, or otherwise secured.
This method offers versatility in styling and is a popular option for those wanting to achieve a new look or for individuals with thinning hair who desire a fuller appearance.
Weaves come in various textures and styles, and when installed by a professional, they provide a seamless, natural-looking enhancement that can be maintained for several weeks.
6 Different Ways to Install Your Weave (Sew-In Hair Extensions) for Beautiful Hair
1. Glue Your Weave
In my opinion, the glue-in method is the easiest and fastest option! However, it can also be the most damaging.
The effectiveness largely depends on how the sew-in weave is installed. There are two primary ways to apply this method.
The first method involves using a strong hair glue to attach hair extensions by either braiding your natural hair or laying it down and then placing a weave cap over your head. The cap serves as a barrier between your hair and the glue.
Once the cap is secure, measure the necessary track for each layer, apply the glue, and press it against your scalp. That’s it! It’s really simple!
This style is commonly referred to as a “quick weave,” and it’s easy to see why!

The second method is similar but skips the cap. Some people prefer to have the tracks glued directly to their hair. There’s a special type of glue designed specifically for this option.
It resembles a molding gel that is applied to your entire head, allowed to dry, and then the tracks are added.
Make sure to use a protective skin prep to prevent irritation from the glue.

2. Sew-In Weave Installation
The sew-in method provides a more secure style, keeping the extensions in place until you’re ready to remove them.
This is our preferred way to install weaves when clients ask us how to apply bundles during their visit to a HazuHair.
To prepare for this style, you’ll need a needle and thread, and your hair will need to be braided.
The two most common braid patterns for the sew-in method are a circular style (also known as the beehive) or straight-back braids. The pattern you choose often depends on how you want the extensions to lay or where your part will be.
It’s a good idea to consult with your stylist so they can provide the best advice for your desired look.
Once your hair is braided, take the needle and thread. I recommend using nylon thread because it creates a more durable sew-in.
Thread the needle and tie a knot to secure the thread in place.
Starting from either side of the nape of your neck, begin sewing the wefts through the braid, pulling the thread all the way through, and then repeating the process.
This method locks the tracks securely to the braids, making it very stable. Plus, removing this style is easy! Simply cut the thread out—just be careful not to cut your own hair! It’s usually best to have someone help you with this part.
3. Crochet Hair
This style has been around since the 1990s and has definitely made a comeback. Out of nowhere, I’ve started seeing many women rocking this look again!
It’s a fun and quick method that almost anyone can do by themselves, allowing you to save money on your next salon visit!
To use the crochet method for applying extensions, you’ll first need a crochet needle. Start by braiding your hair straight back. If you’re aiming for a big hairstyle or kinky curly look, this style is a great choice, as the visible loops won’t be as noticeable compared to straight hair.
The process is simple: slide the needle through the braid, open the latch on the needle, add the hair, close the latch, and voila! You’re done!
Unless you’re not interested in doing your own hair, this method is perfect for you! You can sit back, relax, and enjoy your favorite movie while looping and pulling—just looping and pulling!
4. Install Clip-Ins
The classic extension method that’s been around forever! Everyone from celebrities to high school students, across all ethnicities, enjoys wearing adorable clip-in extensions!
As the name suggests, these are extensions that come threaded on a track with a clip attached, making installation super easy.
People typically use clip-ins when they want to quickly add extra length and/or volume. They look fantastic with straight hair.
Clip-ins are also incredibly popular in the natural hair community, especially our curly clip-in extensions that naturalistas love.
To install, simply part your hair where you want the extension to go and clip it onto your scalp as if you were combing your hair.
For instance, if you’re wearing a braid-out style with your natural hair and want a fuller look, clip-ins would be perfect. You don’t even need to use many—just two or three clip-ins in certain areas can create a beautifully fuller appearance.
5. Micro-Links
Micro-links are also making a significant mark in the beauty industry. This installation method can be quite time-consuming, taking anywhere from three to four hours to complete, and requires a specially trained hairstylist.
To install micro-links, you’ll need a clamping tool, commonly referred to as hair pliers.
The extensions are attached using beads that are applied to each of your hair strands. Your natural hair goes through the bead on a loop, followed by the extensions.
After threading the hair through the bead, you clamp it to secure the section. Once installed, you can treat the extensions just like your own hair.
This means you can wash, cut, style, and color it provided the hair is 100% raw hair or virgin hair.
With this method, you’re guaranteed long-lasting wear! It will create a seamless, natural look that will leave onlookers wondering if it’s all your hair!
6. Bonding Hair Installation
The bonding method is a great option if you want to leave your natural hair out while wearing extensions at the same time.
Some people argue that this method can be damaging to your hair, while others believe the damage depends on how the extensions are removed.
Bonding involves parting your hair and gluing the tracks just underneath the scalp, allowing your scalp to breathe. It’s quite similar to a quick weave installation, but the key difference is that your natural hair remains exposed without any braids.
This technique creates a natural illusion by enabling the extensions to blend seamlessly with your hair.
There you have it! You now have six different hair extension methods to choose from.
Each method serves a unique purpose to cater to various preferences. We love having options because they help you find the method that best fits your needs.
