We understand that the variety of terms used to describe hair quality can be overwhelming, so we’re here to simplify things for our valued clients. Our goal is to help you clearly understand the type of hair you’re purchasing.
Virgin hair vs. Remy hair, Remy vs. non-Remy hair, and hair grades like Double and Super Double Drawn Vietnamese Hair—what do they all mean? Don’t worry, by the end of this article, you’ll have a much clearer understanding and be able to make an informed decision on the best hair choice for your needs.
There are four main categories that define human hair quality: 1. Raw Hair, 2. Virgin Hair, 3. Remy Hair, and 4. Non-Remy Hair. We’ll explain each category in detail.
After that, we’ll dive into hair grades, explaining terms like single, double, and super hair, and the importance of understanding Hair Density.
At Hair Majesty, our two most popular collections are Virgin Hair and Remy Hair. We also offer Raw Hair, available through special orders to meet your specific needs.
What is Raw Hair?
Raw hair refers to human hair that has not undergone any form of chemical or steam processing. It is collected directly from individual donors, with all hair strands aligned in the same direction, preserving the integrity of the cuticles and preventing tangling. Raw hair can be dyed to any color, including bleach blonde (color 613).
Due to its premium quality, raw hair is highly expensive. For example, an 18-inch bundle can range from R2000 to R4000, with most of it being sold in European and American markets. In South Africa, the cost of a raw hair wig can reach between R12,000 and R15,000. While raw hair offers excellent quality, we believe its high price may not be justifiable for most clients. However, if budget is not a concern, raw hair is certainly a luxurious option to consider.
What is Virgin Hair?
Virgin hair refers to human hair that has not undergone any chemical processing or treatments. The hair cuticles are intact and aligned in the same direction, helping to prevent tangling and shedding. Virgin hair is more uniform in length and texture compared to raw hair, but it may not come from a single donor. A result, virgin hair is priced more affordably than raw hair. It can be dyed effectively, usually up to a color 27 (medium blonde), though only raw hair is typically guaranteed to bleach successfully to a color 613 (platinum blonde).
Clients should keep in mind that any hair coloring can cause some degree of damage. If you prefer light blonde shades, we recommend purchasing hair that has been professionally pre-dyed rather than risking damage to a high-quality wig by attempting to bleach it yourself.
What is Remy Hair?
Remy hair refers to high-quality human hair with intact cuticles aligned in the same direction, providing a natural look and feel. Remy hair may undergo mild processing, such as dyeing, perming, or light chemical treatments.
While all virgin hair is considered Remy, not all Remy hair is virgin.
In South Africa, most Remy hair has been processed in some way, making it more affordable than virgin hair. Remy hair can be colored, but it typically holds better to brown shades rather than blonde.
For those seeking a balance between cost and quality, Remy hair is an excellent option and is one of the most popular choices for human hair extensions globally.
What is Non-Remy Hair?
Although we do not sell Non-Remy hair, it can still be a viable option for clients with a strict budget.
Non-Remy hair is human hair where the cuticles have either been chemically removed or are intact but not aligned in the same direction. This misalignment increases the risk of tangling and gives the hair a less natural appearance. The chemical process used to strip the cuticles often leaves the hair with lower moisture levels. Be cautious of brands that use heavy silicone coatings to hide this, as once the silicone washes off, the hair can become dry and prone to tangling. We also do not recommend dyeing Non-Remy hair.
While significantly cheaper than Remy and Virgin hair, Non-Remy hair can still be a suitable choice for budget-conscious clients. It’s important, however, for buyers to understand that Non-Remy hair typically doesn’t last as long as higher-quality options.
Hair Grades
Now that we have a better grasp of the different hair qualities, let’s explore how hair grades—such as single, double, and super—and terms like Vietnamese hair fit into the picture.
Historically, hair grades have been used by brands to differentiate the various hair qualities we’ve discussed. While these grades can provide some insight into the quality differences within a specific brand, it’s crucial not to assume that one company’s Double Drawn grade is inherently better than another’s Single Drawn. There is no regulation preventing companies from labeling their products as Super Double Drawn or even Super Super Double Drawn. The most important factor is to understand the actual quality of the hair you are purchasing.
The Exquisite Beauty of Vietnamese Hair
In Vietnamese culture, long black hair has long been celebrated a symbol of beauty, believed to enhance the allure of Vietnamese women. Traditionally, the ideal image of a Vietnamese lady is that of a young woman with long, straight, smooth black hair, elegantly adorned in a modest “ao dai.” Additionally, due to profound cultural and spiritual beliefs, the Vietnamese place significant value on their hair, viewing it is an essential aspect of their identity and appearance, and they take great care in maintaining it.
Is Vietnamese Hair Good?
Vietnamese human hair is highly regarded as one of the finest hair types in Asia, and here’s why:
- Natural Black and Thick Hair: Vietnamese human hair is characterized by its naturally black and thick texture, a quality influenced by the genetic traits of the Vietnamese people, the country’s temperate climate, and their careful hair care routines.
- Strength and Durability: Known for its remarkable strength and durability, Vietnamese hair stands out among various hair types worldwide. It exhibits incredible elasticity, remains healthy, and is free from tangling or shedding. Even after undergoing chemical or heat treatments, this hair retains its strength and flexibility with proper care. Hair extensions made from Vietnamese hair are exceptionally durable and highly sought after in the international market. While extensions from Chinese, Indian, or other hair types typically last only 1-2 years, Vietnamese hair extensions can last up to 10 years with the right maintenance.
- Impressive Length: The length of Vietnamese human hair is another admired feature. In several regions of Vietnam, particularly in the northern mountainous areas, the tradition of growing long hair is still upheld. Some women have never cut their hair, and it’s common to see Vietnamese girls with hair longer than one meter. Extensions made from Vietnamese hair can reach up to 40 inches in length, making them unique to Vietnam and hard to find in other countries.
The Importance of Hair Density
The volume or density of hair used in wigs significantly impacts the overall look and feel of the final product. Just because two brands claim to sell virgin hair doesn’t guarantee that the quality is identical; one brand may use high-density hair while another opts for lower density, resulting in a completely different appearance.
At HazuHair, we prioritize the use of the highest quality hair for all our wigs, ensuring that the density and volume meet the highest standards. You can be confident that any wig purchased from us will possess excellent density!
For clients who prefer wigs with very high density, we offer the option of using our Double Drawn hair, as showcased in our Queen Z Double Drawn Collection. To learn more about Double Drawn hair, please check out our blog article dedicated to the topic.
