Let’s Talk Hair Textures!
In the past, the world of hair was often simplified to just “thick” or “thin.” However, as the industry has evolved, we now recognize a much broader range of hair textures, from 2A to 4C. This expansion has created a variety of options, especially when it comes to hair extensions.
Instead of simply adding more hair to create a fuller look, which certainly works, human hair wigs now come in various densities and textures to better match individual needs. The extensions world has evolved significantly, offering solutions for all hair types. Personally, I know the struggle well having fine, fragile hair myself, I’ve faced challenges with both natural and extension styles that work for thinner hair.
One of the toughest issues with thinner hair is that your human hair extensions can sometimes show through, making it harder to achieve a seamless blend. It’s frustrating when wispy strands make it difficult to conceal the extensions fully. And let’s not forget about those with thick, luscious hair!
I understand how frustrating it can be when your natural hair is thick, but the extensions you buy are thinner, making blending a challenge. Plus, if you’re used to having voluminous hair, it can be annoying to need multiple bundles of raw hair just to achieve the fullness you desire. Fortunately, with the variety of textures and densities available today, there are solutions for both thin and thick hair, allowing everyone to find the perfect match for a natural, beautiful look.
Different Types of Extension Textures
Vietnamese Hair
Earlier, I mentioned the importance of choosing the right textured extensions to match your hair type. For me, that texture is Vietnamese Hair!
When I first started getting sew-ins, Brazilian hair was the go-to choice. Back then, if you wanted to wear virgin hair, Brazilian was pretty much the only option. But everything changed when I discovered Vietnamese hair. After giving it a try, I realized it was the best decision I ever made for my hair.
Although Vietnamese hair tends to be a bit pricier, the investment is absolutely worth it. It has a naturally silkier texture that still maintains a beautiful bounce, without losing the softness and volume of the bundles.
For my installations, I typically go for three standard bundles along with a lace closure or leave-out. The great thing about Vietnamese hair is how seamlessly it blends with my natural hair, especially when I leave some out. Plus, the wefts aren’t too bulky, making it perfect for finer or more delicate hair textures. If you have thinner hair like me, I highly recommend giving Vietnamese hair a try it’s the perfect blend of sleekness and volume!
Brazilian Hair
Brazilian Deep Wave hair continues to dominate the hair extension industry, and for good reason.
One of the main reasons Brazilian hair is so popular is its versatility, affordability, and availability across a wide range of textures, including body wave, straight, and deep wave. It’s a go-to choice for many because it closely matches the density of natural hair, making it a seamless fit for a variety of hair types.
When we talk about hair density, we’re referring to the thickness or fineness of the individual hair strands. Brazilian hair typically comes with a standard density of 120%, which is common in both natural hair and Brazilian extensions. This density strikes the perfect balance between fullness and manageability, making it a popular choice for women everywhere.
Brazilian hair density can range from 80% to 180%, offering a wide range of options for different styling needs and personal preferences. Whether you want a more natural look or something fuller, Brazilian hair has you covered.
Malaysian Hair
Malaysian Straight Hair Bundles are perfect for individuals with thicker hair or a higher density. Due to its coarser texture and fuller nature compared to Peruvian and Brazilian hair, fewer bundles are needed to achieve a voluminous look.
One of the standout features of Malaysian hair is its ability to hold a tight curl with minimal effort, making it easier to maintain without needing excessive products. While this hair type is often preferred by those with naturally thicker hair, I’ve personally had a great experience with Malaysian hair.
I found it to be easy to manage, drying quickly and effortlessly. As someone who prefers low-maintenance hairstyles, I appreciated how well it suited my lifestyle, requiring less time and product to keep it looking great.
Microlinks/Fused Extensions
Microlinks or Fused Extensions involve bonding extensions to individual strands of natural hair. There are two main methods for this: cold fusion and hot fusion.
Cold Fusion
Cold fusion is a technique where 20 to 30 strands of hair are bonded using a glue or keratin bond. The hair used for this method is pre-bonded, meaning it comes as a unit ready to be attached to your natural hair.
This method is also referred to as Micro-Links, where hair is threaded through a small bead and secured. Cold fusion can take 4-6 hours to complete, and with proper care, it can last for up to six months.
Best Hair Types for Cold Fusion:
- Medium density hair
- Thick hair
Note: Individuals with fine hair might find it difficult to fully conceal the beads at the base of the micro-link, so this method may not be the best option for those with finer hair textures.
Hot Fusion
Hot Fusion, also known as Keratin Bonding, is a method similar to Cold Fusion but involves the use of heat. This technique uses Keratin U-tip bonds that are coated with silicone and applied to the hair using heat tools like a flat iron or blow dryer.
The process involves placing a strand of natural hair between the U-tip, then using a heated extension tool to melt the tip of the extension onto the natural hair. The silicone lining in the U-tip provides a protective barrier for the natural hair. The bonds are applied close to the root, leaving space to accommodate the natural growth of your hair.
Hot Fusion typically takes 2-6 hours to complete and can last up to 4 months with proper care. One important thing to note is that the extensions used in this method are not reusable.
Best Hair Types for Hot Fusion:
- All hair textures
- Particularly beneficial for individuals with thick hair
Cost: Hot Fusion, along with Micro-Linking and Cold Fusion, can be quite expensive. The cost can start around $200, depending on the type of fusion used, the amount of hair being covered, and the length of your natural hair.
Clip-Ins
Clip-in extensions are wefts of hair attached to small clips, making them easy to apply by clipping them into sections of your natural hair. These extensions are quick to install and can be reused multiple times, making them a convenient option for temporary hair enhancement.
Best Hair Types for Clip-Ins: Clip-ins are ideal for thick hair, as the hair needs to be dense enough to conceal the clips, which can sometimes be bulky or visible.
Cost: The cost of clip-in extensions can vary widely. They are often a DIY option, and you can use any type of hair, including store-bought hair, to create your own clip-ins, making them a versatile and customizable choice.
Glue-Ins
Glue-ins involve applying hair extensions using a special adhesive or thirty-second glue. This method requires the application of lace glue along the length of the weft and then attaching it to the natural hair. Light heat is used to seal the bond, ensuring the extensions stay in place.
The process typically takes about one to two hours, depending on whether you’re getting a haircut and how long it takes for the glue to set and dry.
Best Hair Types for Glue-Ins:
This method is versatile, allowing for both styles with hair left out or fully covered, creating an invisible part. It works well for all hair types. However, individuals with sensitive skin or scalps may want to avoid this technique due to the potential irritation from the adhesive.
Cost: The cost of glue-in extensions generally ranges from $45 to $125, depending on the stylist’s experience and location.
Sew-Ins
Sew-in hairstyles have grown increasingly popular due to their versatility, long-lasting results, and the ability to reuse the hair. This method involves sewing the extensions into braids made from your natural hair, creating a seamless look that can last for weeks.
However, it’s important to be cautious about the tension from the braids and the weight of the extensions, as this can sometimes put stress on your natural hair and scalp.
Sew-ins typically take between one to three hours for installation, and with proper care, they can last up to two months. Regular maintenance is essential to preserve the health of your natural hair and prevent damage.
Sew-ins have become my personal favorite because they offer the flexibility to style them like natural hair and provide the option to tuck away all my natural hair when needed.
Best Hair Types for Sew-Ins: Sew-ins are suitable for all hair types! Whether you choose to leave out some of your natural hair, use a closure, or opt for a frontal, this method can work beautifully for any hair type.
